About the work
Princezna Hyacinta (Princess Hyacinth) shows a young woman seated in a richly decorated frame of stars, flowers, jewels and Slavic folk patterns, holding a ring of blossoms. The deep blues, reds and gold give it a jewel-like, theatrical glow.
History
Alphonse Mucha designed this poster in 1911 for the ballet-pantomime Princezna Hyacinta, with music by Oskar Nedbal, staged at the National Theatre in Prague. The model was the actress Andula Sedláčková, who played the title role. Made after Mucha returned from Paris to Bohemia, it is one of the finest posters of his Czech period. The original colour lithograph is in the public domain.
In your home
The saturated colours and strong central figure make it a confident focal point in a living room, hallway or music room, and it looks especially good in a black or dark wood frame.
