About the work
Rêverie (Daydream) is one of Alphonse Mucha’s best-loved Art Nouveau designs. A young woman in a pale, flowing gown sits with a book of designs open on her lap, her hair crowned with flowers and framed by a great circular halo of ornament, blossoms and Byzantine-style patterns in soft greens, pinks and gold.
History
Mucha created the image in 1897 for the Paris printer F. Champenois, whose name runs across the top of the composition. It was first issued as a calendar for 1898, which is why the year appears in the top corners, and Champenois then sold it as a decorative panel. The original colour lithograph is in the public domain.
In your home
The warm cream and muted teal palette sits easily in living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners, and pairs well with natural wood, brass and botanical prints. It is a natural first piece for an Art Nouveau or vintage gallery wall.
